2022 Preakness Stakes Betting Picks and Morning Line Odds

The morning line odds and post positions for the 2022 Preakness Stakes are now available, which means we can start to break down this second race of the 2022 Triple Crown.

Epicenter, who finished second at the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, is the favourite with odds of 6-5. Rich Strike decided to skip the Preakness to focus on the Belmont Stakes race in June, which means there will not be a Triple Crown winner this year. Early Voting (7-2), Secret Oath (9-2) and Simplification (6-1) are the other contenders heading into the Preakness.

The field of 9 horses is a typical size for the Preakness Stakes, and with a field this size anything can happen. Let’s get into it!

2022 Preakness Stakes Morning Line Odds

I’ve listed the morning line odds and post position for each Preakness Stakes horse below.  These are the odds that each horse will open at on Saturday morning.  The odds will change throughout the day depending on the amount of money that is wagered on the various horses in the field.  Basically all of the bets taken on the Preakness will go into a betting pool and the odds will be decided by the amount wagered on each horse.  To learn more about this betting system head over to our parimutuel betting page.

  1. Simplification 6-1
  2. Creative Minister 10-1
  3. Fenwick 50-1
  4. Secret Oath 9-2
  5. Early Voting 7-2
  6. Happy Jack 30-1
  7. Armagnac 12-1
  8. Epicenter 6-5
  9. Skippylongstocking 20-1

As you can see Epicenter is a significant favorite heading into the race, while Early Voting, Secret Oath, Simplification and Creative Minister are the other horses with 10-1 odds or shorter.

Preakness Stakes Top Picks

Below I will give my favourite picks for the 2022 Preakness Stakes.  I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.

Epicenter 6-5

Epicenter performed well at the Kentucky Derby. If it wasn’t for Rich Strike having an unbelievable final stretch, Epicenter would have done what he needed to do to hold off fellow favorite, Zandon, down the stretch. Epicenter is a horse that seems to perform better at the shorter distances, so the 1 3/16 mile length of the Preakness should be the perfect distance for Epicenter. I expect this horse to bounce back from his second place finish at the Derby and win the Preakness to lock in a Triple Crown race victory.

Creative Minister 10-1

My longer shot pick is Creative Minister at 10-1. I think this horse is a contender and he may be being overlooked relative to the other contenders outside of Epicenter. This horse has won races in the last two months, and he improved his time significantly from his April race to his May race (both at 1 1/16 mile distances). Creative Minister’s last race time of 1:42.37 was extremely fast and if he can keep that speed for another 1/4 mile at the Preakness then he has a legitimate shot of getting the win or at least battling with Epicenter down the stretch.
