The NBA All-Star weekend does their skills competitions the right way. They keep them fairly consistent year to year and bring in guys who actually want to compete rather than forcing players to perform one or two skills. This keeps the competitions entertaining and competitive, and allows you to compare results from year to year.
This year the All-Star Festivities will begin on Friday night with the Celebrity Game and Rising Stars Tournament. The Skills Competitions will take place Saturday night (starting at 8pm on TSN3 and TSN4) with the Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest and Slam Dunk Contest taking center stage. The NBA All-Star Game will then take place Sunday night starting at 8pm EST. I will give my pick for the winner of each skills competition event below using the odds found at Bodog.eu.

Taco Bell Skills Challenge
The skills challenge will feature 3 teams of 3 that will compete in four challenges that include Team Shooting, Team Passing, Team Relay and Half-court Shot.
I think anyone can win this event, so I’m looking at Team Cavs to rise to the occasion in front of their home fans. Home court advantage could help in some of these events, and there is also the possibility of organizers giving the Cavs team an edge to keep the home fans happy.
Play: Team Cavs 2.85
As you can see from the odds this competition is up for grabs this year. Defending champion Steph Curry is not in the field, and the only surprise winner would be Karl-Anthony Towns.
I like Fred VanVleet at odds of 6.50. I’ve seen him as a favourite at another sportsbook (a great reason to compare odds). He has the 3-point stroke that could allow him to get hot in this competition. In-game shooting doesn’t necessarily translate to the 3-point contest, but VanVleet has the ability to get into a groove and come up clutch, which could be the difference in this competition.
Play: VanVleet 6.50
Slam Dunk Contest
I’m going to stick with my theory that the players are basically on an even playing field in each of these skills comps. Jalen Green is the favourite here, but I will be going with Cole Anthony because he has a big personality, and I think he will play to the fans/judges in order to get some big scores and win this event.
Play: Cole Anthony 4.50
