No sooner does one tournament finish does a qualifying competition for another begin such is the way of the snooker world these days. On Tuesday the Northern Ireland Open qualifiers get going in Wigan.

The majority of the bigger names in the sport have had their qualifying match held over to the main venue so it is those below the elite that we will see this week but there are still some household names on show on Tuesday.

Morning Session

As was the case with the British Open qualifying a couple of weeks ago, the morning session sees a set of Asian players on show. It is actually the Welsh player Jamie Jones who is the highest ranked player on either of the two tables. He has a date with Andy Lee in order to make it back through to another main draw. The other match sees Chen Zifan on show. He takes on one of the two women who are in action on Tuesday in the form of Ng On Yee.

Early Afternoon Session

Two more matches take place in the early afternoon session and this is where we see the second female player in action. That is Mink Nutcharut who is on her first season on the tour and looking for a first win after some competitive outings thus far. She meets Mitchell Mann but it is Cao Yupeng who is the highest ranked player on show. His season hasn’t started as well as he would have wanted but a win over Dylan Emery to book a ticket to Belfast would make up for that.

Later Afternoon Session

This is where the bigger names begin to come to the party with the former European Masters winner Jimmy Robertson the leading light in terms of the ranking. He has a good looking match against Gary Wilson to overcome. Ryan Day is another household name on show on Tuesday. The former Shootout champion has had a decent start to the season and he’ll be looking to continue that when he comes up against Ben Woollaston.

Evening Session

Stephen Maguire is one of the biggest players who will be on show this week and he has his match in the evening session. On the face of it he should be far too good for Oliver Brown but these two met in the European Masters qualifying when Brown came out on top in a deciding frame. The other match sees two men with a big chance to make some cash and get themselves into a main draw when Zak Surety takes on Himanshu Dinesh Jain.

There is one bet I like to get another week of qualifying action underway and that comes in that later afternoon session where Jimmy Robertson can get the better of Gary Wilson. These two have met three times in the past and Robertson has won them all. The latest of those was only last year so there is a relevant feel to that head-to-head record. I think at his best Robertson is the better player of these two and the more consistent.

We have seen shades of that this season. Wilson has had good wins this season but he’s had bad defeats too including to Daniel Wells in the second round of the European Masters last week. Robertson was beaten by Kyren Wilson in that tournament but given that he went on and won the event that wasn’t exactly a bad result. That aside though, Robertson has been in decent touch and even at 4/5 I think there is enough in the price to side with him to win this.

Back J.Robertson to beat G.Wilson for a 3/10 stake at 1.80 with 1.80 with William Hill
